This model is the Vanguards VA10407 Hillman Avenger in the white livery of the Garda's Mallow District Patrol Car. The Garda used Avengers extensively during the seventies and the car modelled was a district patrol car based at Mallow Garda Station in County Cork. Although Gardsa vehicles were traditionally dark blue or black, this particular Avenger was ordered in white because, in addition to its normal duties, it was one of the first cars to be employed by the then embryonic Traffic Corp who used white vehicles as they were more visible. Rural patrol cars such as [9163 ZO], which entered service in 1974, covered very high mileages, typically around 30,000 miles per year (48280 Kilometers), so were retained for less than three years.
This limited edition model has some detailing and no opening parts. At the front there is a chromed bumper. Below this is the number plate [9163 ZO] in white text on black background. The front lights are represented by clear crystal lenses set into the chrome grille, which comes complete with badge, and the indicators by tiny orange painted panels. Two tiny photo-etched wipers grace the front windscreen. The front doors are painted white with the word "GARDA" in blue above the Garda insignia in gold, silver and blue. The doors are finished off with the door handles highlighted in silver. The roof has the obligatory blue roof light of the period on a roof sign with the word "GARDA" on the front and rear. At the rear is another chromed bumper and the rear lights are represented by red and orange plastic inserts. The vehicle carries a tampo printed Hillman Avenger badge on the boot lid together with a small silver lock. Below the boot lid is another tampo printed item representing the petrol cap.
The entire interior is black plastic with a right hand drive black plastic steering wheel set into the dashboard. Interior feature include the gearstick, hand brake, Seats and interior rear view mirror. The glazing is clear all round.
All wheels have solid, one piece grey plastic hubs with a separate chrome exterior hub and hub cap insert and separate black rubber tyres.
The base plate is black plastic and is marked with "Vanguards" in the centre top and "Hillman Avenger" at the centre bottom. The base plate casting also has minimalist front and rear suspension system, engine sump, gearbox, drive shaft and differential, and exhaust system. I believe it is held in place by the numberplates which act as sprung clips.
This model was issued circa 2009 and is #0050 of 1750 worldwide. Its scale is stated to be 1/43.
