This model is the Unknown Mercedes Benz Police Car in yellow and red. The item is plastic and is a very basic moulding.
The model has a two-piece, cast plastic body and base, 260mm in length, 98mm wide, and 80mm high. It has been shaped with rudimentary representations of the body lines, lights, grille, and bumpers. There is no glazing.
At the front, the grille, bumper, and number plate are represented by part of the casting that forms the base of the toy. The bonnet carries body trim to represent the centre shapes, and bonnet outline, above which is framed the front windscreen. The headlights are cast into the body. To the sides there are basic outlines of the doors, side windows, and the side rear windows. The rear carries an outline of the boot, and a Mercedes badge, with the rear bumper and over-riders being part of the base casting. On the roof of the car is a green plastic roof sign reading "POLICE" with sirens or loudspeakers mounted on top of it.
There is no interior or glazing on this model.
All of the original four wheels are present. They are single piece, hollow, hub and tyre mouldings with eight bolt pattern, mounted on steel axles. The wheels are pressure attached to the steel axles that pass through the base moulding.
The base plate is a single piece, shaped, red plastic unit. It has been press fitted to the yellow body via eight pins that fit into the eight cast pillars that protrude down from the body casting. It has no manufacturer's mark, but has country of origin details cast into the base which read "Made in Australia" on a single line, forward of, and parallel to, the front axle.
I do not know exactly when this item was issued but believe it to be the late 1980s. The model was possibly manufactured in Melbourne, Australia.
