This model is the Onyx 178 McLaren Ford MP4/8 in White and Dayglo Orange McLaren Ford livery as driven by Michael Andretti in 1993.
The McLaren MP4/8 was a Formula One racing car which competed in the 1993 season. It raced in all sixteen Grand Prix, scoring five wins. The engine was a Ford HBD7 3.5 V8. Thanks to a watershed use of electronics technology that cars used in the 1993 season, the car was designed by Neil Oatley around advanced electronics technology, including a semi-automatic transmission, active suspension and traction control systems that was developed in conjunction with McLaren shareholder Techniques d'Avant Garde (TAG).
The car was driven by triple World Champion Ayrton Senna in his 6th season with McLaren and American CART driver Michael Andretti, the son of the 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti, who was entering into his first (and ultimately only) season in Formula One. Andretti was replaced after the Italian Grand Prix by the team's test driver Mika Häkkinen.
The body casting is basic, covering the general shape of the vehicle but with several additional plastic parts representing the mirrors, steering wheel, seat, driver, and suspension making it better than, say, the early Onyx models. It carries few logos (McLaren, Shell, Goodyear), has the racing number "7" in orange, and carries the driver's name "Andretti" on both sides of the cockpit fin.
The interior is set out with steering wheel and seat, and wing mirrors protruding from inside the cockpit area. There is no glazing on this model.
All wheels are of a "racing wheel" type - solid one piece, black plastic, 6 spoke hub with a soft rubber slick tyre.
The base plate is black plastic and is marked at the centre top with ONYX, "Formula One Car" at the middle centre, and "Fabrique Au Portugal" at the bottom centre. The base plate is held in place with four machined rivets.
I do not know when this model was issued. Its scale is said to be 1:43.
