Fun Ho! #15 Hillman Imp

This model is of the Fun Ho! #15 Hillman Imp in Chrome. This model is most likely based on the Hillman Imp Series I released between 1963 and 1965. Hillman Imps were built by Todd Motors in Petone, New Zealand between 1964 and 1970 when production of the Imp ceased as Todd's needed the assembly line for the Hillman Avenger and Hillman Hunter.

There are no opening parts on this model. All features are cast into the metal of the model. The model appears to be based on a Hillman Imp Series I (1963 to 1965) which was replaced by the Series II in late 1965.

At the front of the Fun Ho! Hillman Imp there is a cast representation of the bumper, headlights, and front badge. Both sides carry cast body lines and representations of the front doors. The rear is cast to show the rear lights and the engine compartment lid. Both front and rear bumpers are part of the body casting.

There is no interior or glazing.

All wheels appear to be one piece, black plastic, typical of the Fun Ho! miniatures of the time, mounted on steel domed axles. They look oversized, due to the scale of the model.

The base plate appears to be lightly plated. It is held in place by two machined rivets, one to the front and one to the rear. The base is marked "Fun Ho!, N.Z., HILLMAN IMP" on three lines to the centre middle.

This is likely to have been an early issue of the model, issued in 1966 prior to the cessation of plated model production. During its original lifetime (1966-72), 31,500 models were manufactured, originally in a chrome finish, and later with a paint finish. This model comes complete with its original Fun Ho! Mobil Midgets packaging (printed to represent a Mobil petrol pump) as part of a promotion with the Mobil Oil Company.

The scale is unknown but thought to be around 1:90. My reasoning is that the normal length for the Hillman IMP was 141 inches (3.581 metres) and the model has a length of just over 1.5 inches (40mm) (3581/40 = 1:89.5).
