This model is the Dinky 961-H-1 Bedford Vega Major Luxury Coach in light orange, PTT livery with very pale yellow roof. This item was marketed as the Swiss Postal Bus and uses the revised casting of the 952-G minus its battery box and lights (also used for the 954-H bus).
The model features a cast metal body with opening rear luggage compartment. The front bumper, grill and "V" emblem are picked out in silver paint. Inset in to the grill area are four clear lenses, two larger ones to repre3sent the headlights and two smaller ones to represent the front side lights. On each side is a red paper or plastic stripe and an orange paper label with black print that reads "PTT". Also on the label are some black lines (symbolic of the lines of text that appear on the real buses) and the "hunting horn" logo. Orange plastic lenses, set between the first and second front axle, represent the side indicators (trafficators).
The interior is pale blue plastic and consists of a single, right hand side driver's seat (with black plastic steering wheel and column in front of it) and twelve rows of passenger's seats, representing a capacity of 49 passengers. The only glazing on these models is clear, on all sides of the bus and in the three sunrooves and 8, roof-level, viewing windows. Further information has come to light from the members of the Matchbox Collectors Community Hall (MCCH) added as a comment at the foot of this page.**
All wheels are of a shaped cast metal type - solid one piece cast metal hubs, unpainted, with a commercial 5 stud centre with a separate black "rubber" tyre imprinted with the words "Heavy Duty".
The baseplate is black painted metal with Dinky Supertoys at the top centre, "Vega Major Luxury Coach" at the bottom centre, "Pat No 920534" at the rear top, and "Meccano Ltd, Made in England" at the rear centre, just behind the rear axle. It is fixed through the use of a single rear body locating tab and a single self-tapping screw at the front of the bus.
This model was issued between 1973 and 1977.
Can have red, blue or yellow interior. Also can come in a special promotional box. [Thanks to John over at MCCH]
