This model is the Dinky 128-G-2b Mercedes Benz 600 in metallic dark blue. I have coded this item 2b as it has a white interior and the reference by Force refers to blue and orange interiors, while Ramsay lists only white interiors, and Richardson doesn't mention interiors at all. Vectis with Lot 2522 in The Ron Slyder Collection - October 11th, 2006, reported an example with yellow interior.
This model features a multiple piece cast body with opening bonnet, four doors, and boot.At the front is is a separate casting for the bumper, lightly plated. Above this is the Mercedes grille with badge, which is also a separate casting, fixed to the opening bonnet. Either side of the grille are two front lights, plastic lenses fitted to recesses in the main body. The bonnet opens to reveal a chromed engine. The entire body is painted metallic dark blue with the lower side body, below the doors, mask sprayed silver. The opening side doors have door handles. The rear is cast with lights and number plate on the main body casting. The opening boot is a separate casting with minimal detail, and the rear bumper is also a separate, lightly plated casting.
The interior is white plastic with a black plastic steering wheel on the left. The glazing is clear all round.
All wheels are of the cast metal type - solid, one piece, cast metal hubs with a 6 spoke pattern, each with a separate black rubber tyre, fitted to steel, pressure fitted axles.
The base plate appears to be a very dark brown painted metal. It is marked with "Patent Numbers, 920534 & 891661" in tiny lettering, on two lines under the left door sills, "Dinky Toys, Mercedes-Benz 600" on two lines to the top middle centre, and "Meccano Ltd, Made In England, 128" on three lines to the bottom centre. There are filled plinth mounting bosses along the "drive shaft". The base also has representations of the front lower engine, suspension, rear differential and petrol tank. The base is held by a single self tapping screw at the front and a body locating lug to the rear.
The metallic dark blue model was only issued between 1975 and 1979 and came without the figures and luggage that were included with the earlier maroon versions.
